Summary

Interest in producing sustainable cotton continues to grow across all facets of the supply chain. By adopting a soil health management system, producers can help the cotton industry meet sustainability goals while improving productivity and reducing the environmental impact of farming operations. This presentation will explain how the Soil Health Institute has partnered with Wrangler Jeans and The Walmart Foundation to provide training on soil health management systems in cotton production. The Healthy Soils for Sustainable Cotton project seeks to expand the adoption of soil health management systems by cotton producers through extensive soil health training and through quantifying production and environmental benefits associated with adoption. Participants will be introduced to those conservation practices and activities that have been demonstrated to improve soil health in cotton production systems and increase the soil function necessary for food and fiber production. A soil health management system is made of management activities that address the four soil health principles: minimizing disturbance, maximizing diversity, keeping living roots growing, and maintaining residue cover. This webcast will demonstrate how improving soil health serves as an “umbrella,” covering all key performance indicators for sustainable cotton production.

About the Presenter

David LammDavid Lamm earned a BS in Natural Resources from Ball State University in 1978 and has more than 40 years’ experience working for NRCS. He started his career in Indiana working his way through the state in various conservationist positions. For 15 years, he served as District Conservationist for the Ft. Wayne Field Office where he worked to help farmers adopt no-till systems for corn and soybeans. While serving as the Assistant State Conservationist for programs in Georgia, David instituted several innovative projects to encourage the adoption of a Soil Health Management System. Since October 2008, David served as Team Leader for the National Soil Health and Sustainability Team, and has led the effort to provide training to all NRCS employees on soil health. He also assisted with the NRCS Organic Agriculture and Sustainable Ag effort and was often detailed to NHQ to develop program policy, particularly for the Conservation Security Program. In June of 2015 David was selected as the Division of Soil Health National Soil Health Team Leader. His experience merging the technical side of conservation, (no-till farming, cover crops and nutrient and pest management) and knowledge of NRCS conservation programs made him an asset to the new division. David retired in June 2018 and has continued his passion for soil health by joining the Soil Health Institute as the manager for their “Healthy Soils for Sustainable Cotton” project.
