Summary

​This presentation was developed to help consultants, growers, and other practitioners in all regions of the United States covers all the major aspects that need to be addressed to successfully manage common scab of potato. The presentation covers these major themes: (1) a general introduction to the disease; (2) development and description of the symptomatology associated with common scab; (3) another disease of potato called powdery scab that shares some features with common scab; (4) specific characteristics of the organisms involved; (5) specific in-field features of this disease; and (6) the best management practices for dealing with this disease.

About the Presenter

Thomas A. Zitter​ Thomas A. Zitter received both his BS and PhD degrees in Botany and Plant Pathology from Michigan State University in 1963 and 1968, respectively. He began his professional career at the Everglades Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Belle Glade with the University of Florida. In 1979, he joined the Department of Plant Pathology at Cornell University and is currently Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology. At Cornell, he has pursued an active research and Extension program addressing the needs of commercial vegetable production throughout New York and is recognized for his work with peppers, cucurbits, tomatoes, and potatoes.
